Proper
housing is essential to good health. House of Ruth is not a house,
but it is an organization comprised of all of the components that
come to mind when we think of home: warmth, acceptance, love, support
and shelter, in the literal sense.
Shelter is one of the most basic human necessities. But besides
being a place to "hang your hat," House of Ruth provides
a safe, loving environment in which families can grow and learn
to take care of each other, without being judged or ridiculed.
House of Ruth relies on the Housing and Building Fund to build
and maintain several properties that are available to those infected
with HIV/AIDS and their dependents. In addition to housing, case-management
services are also available, to help provide a safe, stable home-life
for those who rely on subsidized housing. Over the years, as House
of Ruth has acquired more housing units, as well as more clients,
the need for this fund has grown dramatically.
The Housing Fund provides assistance through:
- Case-management
House of Ruth provides intense case-management
as part of its holistic way of helping families maintain and stabilize
their housing. It also helps with budgeting, household responsibilities
and daily living skills. Case-management is necessary in making sure that
families successfully maintain independent living, especially by
acting as advocates, for those infected with/affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Financial assistance in purchasing and constructing
housing
As House of Ruth continues to grow, so does the need for safe,
affordable housing. This fund provides financial assistance in acquiring
or building homes for individuals and families.
- Funds for renovating and refurbishing
Just as with
any housing complex, it is necessary to make minor changes to the
properties between tenants. Painting, carpet cleaning and minor
repairs are all services that are made possible through this fund.
- Help with rent, deposits and mortgages
This fund provides
emergency support to those who need help in either securing housing
or making monthly payments.
- Lodging Kits
These kits provide basic necessities for
the home, including kitchen, bathroom and bedroom items.
- Capital expenses
This includes funding for new projects
as well as building repairs, to both House of Ruth offices as well
as housing that is provided to its clients.
- Matching government grants
Although government grants
are available, many require House of Ruth to monetarily match these
funds.
