A pounding
head, a rising temperature, an aching body, and a mountain
of medical bills.
Although Medicare and Medicaid cover most of the medical expenses
related to HIV/AIDS, there are some things that aren't covered.
In addition, because new medications are better able to manage the
illness, some infected individuals may not even be eligible for
Medicare or Medicaid during the early stages of the disease.
House of Ruth recognizes the hefty burden that families carry and
how difficult it can be to buy a special wheelchair or medical supplies,
especially if the family has recently undergone a change in income
status. That is why the Medical Assistance Fund exists. It helps
ease the burden of medical bills, so families infected with/affected
by HIV/AIDS can concentrate on more basic needs.
The Medical Assistance Fund cares for individuals by providing:
- Co-payments on prescriptions and doctor's office visits
Even the smallest of medical bills can seem overwhelming to
a lower-income family. The Medical Assistance Fund recognizes this
and helps families afford the care they need.
- Extraordinary Medical Needs
Sometimes an infected individual
experiences health problems that are unrelated to HIV/AIDS, yet
require special treatment. Infected individuals may require certain
HIV/AIDS-related treatments not covered by insurance. This fund
helps to pay for health-related emergencies.
- Medical supplies
House of Ruth created this fund to
pay for equipment that is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid. These
needs may include wheelchairs and other assistive devices.
- Over-the-counter medication and vitamins
This fund
not only provides for the infected, but also for those immediate
family members who are affected by AIDS.
- Patient education and counseling
Because of the nature of the illness, nurses are needed, not only
to educate the infected/affected individuals, but also to provide
comfort as the illness progresses and life ends.
